South Africa: Leaky Toilets are a huge Problem!

Mayor Patricia DeLille is blaming residents. But,  85% of the toilets in Cape Town leak invisibly. Most of the non-compliant people are working extremely hard to save water and don’t understand why they are over the limit, despite their very best efforts. It was the CITY ITSELF that installed the toilets in the public housing projects with either faulty valves, or over time, broken valves. The people of Cape Town cannot be blamed for excessive water usage when the leaky valve is silently wasting water.  The city in fact unknowingly INSTALLED the problem years ago. The city needs to swap out the faulty valves for good ones. It is unrealistic to expect ordinary people to see invisible leaks and learn how to fix them. 4.5 million toilets * .02 liters per minute * 85% leak rate is about 76,500 liters per minute leaking in faulty toilet valves in Cape Town. This is easily 110 million liters of clean drinking water wasted invisibly every single day in Cape Town alone. Further, this is a problem that is widespread in ALL OF SOUTH AFRICA. Durban and even Johannesburg could soon be running out of water too without fixing their toilets. The South African toilets may very well be the root cause of the first Modern Major City in the world running completely out of water for months.
